2018 Projects

ALGENIE

1st PLACE

Algenie is a sustainable model for farming algae and seaweed. Our goal is to design a modular farm allowing for quick and efficient seaweed production. This will serve, along with red algae, as feed for cows to reduce methane emissions. It also serves as bases for superfoods to cultivate community awareness and promote consumer adoption.

Manatee Marker

2ND PLACE

Humans endanger the small Florida Manatee population, mainly by killing nearly 100 each year in boat collisions. Our solar-powered sonar sensor grid of buoys will detect manatees along Florida’s coastline and alert boat drivers to their presence. Cameras atop the buoys aid in enforcing speed limitsĀ  of passing vessels during times of warning.

SWITCH2SAVE

3rd Place

Switch2Save is an interface allowing landlords, and tenants to work together to lower energy usage for mutual monetary benefits in the form of end-of-year rebates. Commonplace smartphone interactions will create a convenient and understandable energy use report, and end-of-year rebates will incentivize lower usage on both ends.

COLLIDE-O-SCOPE

4TH PLACE

Collide-o-scope is a Real-Time Human-Wildlife Collision Avoidance system that usesĀ seismic elephant detectors on rail lines and an alert system in trains to let operators and outside parties know an animal is on the tracks. Data can be used by operators and parties monitoring tracks. The prototype included code powering this solution.

GREEN SCREEN

5TH PLACE

Green Screen is a software/hardware solution that uses Fourier Transform Near-Infrared (FT-NIR) and machine learning to gather and analyze raw data from plants in the field.
