2021 Projects

rinse & rePEAT

1st PLACE

Rinse & rePEAT is a carbon finance program for the restoration of the Indonesian Tropical Peat Swamp Forests. The restoration project draws from previous research by first maintaining the land’s water, and then reintroducing native plants necessary for the reestablishment of peat and soil preservation. Implementation of the program would restore the native ecosystem and protect the Dayak people who are an indigenous group dependent on the region.

Defending Environmental Defenders

4TH PLACE

Defending Forest Defenders seeks to develop a digital tool to map and track violent cases against environmental defenders, especially in indigenous grounds. The tool relies on an IoT network built on a private, proof-of-authority blockchain to ensure data privacy between environmental defenders and international actors communicating with each other, as opposed to more insecure platforms like WhatsApp.
